Moldova is one of the poorest Republics from the former Soviet Union and is landlocked with Romania to the west and the Ukraine to the north, south and east. Chisinau is the capital city of Moldova.
Because of its poor economy children are often abandoned by their parents to orphanages so the parents can go find work in other countries. Many of these children spend their entire lives in the orphanages until they turn 16, where upon they are released to try and survive on their own. Upon their release from the orphanages they are without work themselves and are often kidnapped or lured into Human Trafficking by the Russian Mafia.
WMBC has sent four mission teams to the Eastern European country of Moldova since 2005 and a fifth team is tentatively scheduled to return in 2012. The teams have worked in state run summer camps where children, housed in orphanages during the school year, are sent for the summer. Music, Bible stories, recreations, crafts and one on one time are the focus of the work with the children at the camps. In addition teams have ministered at Grace House, a transitional living home for teen girls who are too old for the traditional orphanage. Teaching life skills, and instilling a sense of hope in the girls is part of the goal as the WMBC women work to transition these girls to life outside the orphanage. The purpose of all the teams is to make sure these children, who do have the love of a traditional mother/father/family, know they have a heavenly Father who loves them and gives them hope for a brighter future.
